Poly-B in Victoria homes

Polybutylene plumbing was commonly installed in Victoria homes built between 1978 and 1998. If your home was constructed during this period, there's a possibility it contains poly-B pipes. Many insurance companies in British Columbia now have specific policies regarding polybutylene plumbing, including potential surcharges or requirements for replacement. Learn more about poly-B →

The City of Victoria itself is mostly older housing: 63.6% of its 49,225 occupied dwellings were built before 1981, and only 9,130 (18.5%) date from 1981–2000 in the 2021 Census. Across the wider Victoria census metropolitan area the share rises to 24.3%, and several suburbs sit well above that, including North Saanich at 39.0%, Sidney at 35.0%, Central Saanich at 34.7% and View Royal at 31.0%, against 9.0% in Oak Bay. The community guides below use each municipality’s own census figures.

For strata owners anywhere in the region, British Columbia’s Strata Property Act treats pipes inside walls between units as common property (BC Laws), so talk to the strata council before booking work. BC does not currently list plumbing among its compulsory certified trades (SkilledTradesBC), so ask each contractor about the qualifications of the person who will actually do the job.
