Poly-B in Surrey homes

Polybutylene plumbing was commonly installed in Surrey homes built between 1978 and 1998. If your home was constructed during this period, there's a possibility it contains poly-B pipes. Many insurance companies in British Columbia now have specific policies regarding polybutylene plumbing, including potential surcharges or requirements for replacement. Learn more about poly-B →

Surrey built more poly-B-era housing than any Metro Vancouver city except Vancouver itself: 68,530 occupied dwellings from 1981–2000 in the 2021 Census, or 36.9% of its 185,670. The pace did not let up afterward, and the two decades from 2001 to 2021 added even more homes than the poly-B years did.

Replacement costs in the region tend to run higher than on the Prairies, partly because fewer west coast homes have basements, which makes pipes harder to reach (Square One). One Vancouver-area firm quotes $6,000–$12,000 for the plumbing and $5,000–$10,000 more for drywall, about ten days of work in all (Clearly Plumbing & Drainage). British Columbia does not make plumbing a compulsory certified trade (SkilledTradesBC), so ask about the installer’s qualifications. The Vancouver guide has the full regional picture.
