Poly-B in Markham homes

Polybutylene plumbing was commonly installed in Markham homes built between 1978 and 1998. If your home was constructed during this period, there's a possibility it contains poly-B pipes. Many insurance companies in Ontario now have specific policies regarding polybutylene plumbing, including potential surcharges or requirements for replacement. Learn more about poly-B →

Markham grew out of the 1980s. The 2021 Census counts 20,570 occupied dwellings from 1981–1990, more than any other single census period in the city, and another 17,265 from 1991–2000, together 34.1% of its 110,865. Only 2.6% of Markham’s housing predates 1961, so for most owners the question is whether the house went up before or after poly-B left the market.

Markham is part of York Region, which receives some of its drinking water from the City of Toronto’s system (Toronto drinking water report). Any plumber you hire in Ontario must hold a certificate, provisional certificate or registered training agreement and appear on the public register (Skilled Trades Ontario). The Toronto & GTA guide sets Markham beside Vaughan, Richmond Hill and the other 905 cities.
