Poly-B in Kelowna homes
Polybutylene plumbing was commonly installed in Kelowna homes built between 1978 and 1998. If your home was constructed during this period, there's a possibility it contains poly-B pipes. Many insurance companies in British Columbia now have specific policies regarding polybutylene plumbing, including potential surcharges or requirements for replacement. Learn more about poly-B →
Nearly a third of Kelowna’s occupied dwellings, 19,270 of 62,205 or 31.0%, were built between 1981 and 2000, according to the 2021 Census. That is a higher share than Vancouver, Calgary or Toronto, and the 1990s were busier than the 1980s here: 10,745 dwellings date from 1991–2000 against 8,525 from the decade before. Very little of the city, 6.4% of dwellings, predates 1961.
No Kelowna-specific replacement price has been published by a source we could open, so the replacement guide is the place to compare British Columbia and national ranges. Owners in strata complexes should know that under BC’s Strata Property Act, pipes running through walls between units or serving other units are common property (BC Laws). For a first look at your own pipes, the identification guide needs only a flashlight and an exposed length of supply line.
When Kelowna's homes were built
The share of homes built during the poly-B years is the best single predictor of how common it is in a city.
