Poly-B in Coquitlam homes

Polybutylene plumbing was commonly installed in Coquitlam homes built between 1978 and 1998. If your home was constructed during this period, there's a possibility it contains poly-B pipes. Many insurance companies in British Columbia now have specific policies regarding polybutylene plumbing, including potential surcharges or requirements for replacement. Learn more about poly-B →

More than a third of Coquitlam’s occupied dwellings, 20,275 of 55,950 or 36.2%, were built from 1981 to 2000 according to the 2021 Census. The 1990s were the peak with 10,935 dwellings, followed by a quieter decade and then a new wave of construction after 2010.

The city also gives its name to one of the region’s two treatment plants. Metro Vancouver’s Coquitlam Water Treatment Plant, north of the city, treats about 380 million litres a day with ozone and ultraviolet light, and chlorine is used across the system as a disinfectant (Metro Vancouver). The Insurance Bureau of Canada lists poly-B’s reactivity with chlorine among the reasons it fails (IBC), so a 1990s house here deserves a look at its supply lines. The Vancouver guide covers strata rules, permits and BC insurance.
